  • What are the costs of a funeral nowadays?

The average burial or cremation can easily cost NAfl/Afl 8,000 or 5,000 usd on Bonaire. With additional personal wishes, this amount can increase quickly. There are the expenses of a burial monument and grave maintenance. You can easily end up spending thousands of guilders on these. But you also have to consider the purchase of a coffin, funeral service, advertisements, flowers, etc. With a cremation you have to consider cremation costs and also the above-mentioned matters such as flowers etc. In general, the cost of a cremation is slightly lower than that of a burial. To help you determine the necessary value for your funeral insurance, we have developed a funeral value meter.

  • Can I take out funeral insurance if my wish is to be buried abroad?

Yes, it is possible to take out funeral insurance for abroad. This can be freely spent on funeral costs up to the insured amount, for example, the transportation costs of the deceased. The amount that must be insured greatly depends on the country in which you wish to be buried. Contact Onderlingehulp if you want to know more about this.

  • My wife is pregnant. Is our unborn child co-insured?

Yes, absolutely. Funeral costs are reimbursed up to a maximum of NAfl/Afl  1,000 or 500 usd in the case of stillborn children, or in the event of passing within 30 days after birth. In that case, one of both parents needs to be a premium-paying client at Onderlingehulp.

  • Can I co-insure my children?

Yes, your children up to 18 years of age are co-insured free of charge for a maximum of NAfl/Afl 4,000 or 2,000 usd.

  • I recently bought a house and took out a mortgage. I also took out risk insurance at the time. Is funeral insurance still necessary?

Yes, of course! The risk insurance that you took out only applies to the mortgage and ensures the repayment of the mortgage in the event of your passing. In addition, this insurance has a certain term, and you are therefore not guaranteed a benefit. If you should pass away after the end of the term, there will be no benefit. So, if you want to be insured for your funeral expenses and do not want to worry about arranging the funeral, it is better to take out separate funeral insurance.

  • When I took out my insurance, I was sure that I wanted to be buried. But now I would prefer cremation. Should the policy be amended now?

No need. Onderlingehulp makes no difference between burial or cremation. As our policyholder, you decide what you want. Keep in mind that the costs of a burial are generally slightly higher than that of a cremation.

  • My husband and I are separating. What happens to our insurance now?

At Onderlingehulp, we issue a policy per person. In most cases we can link this policy to your new details. In that case, the insurance will be split, as well as the premium payment. Please get in touch with Onderlingehulp directly for the possibilities.

  • I am going abroad soon and might end up living there. Can I take my insurance with me?

Yes, that is possible. There are a few things you should take into account. A funeral abroad needs to be arranged by the next of kin themselves, after which Onderlingehulp is informed. In addition, you must continue to pay the premium from where you are.

  • My employer will be paying for my funeral expenses. Does it make sense for me to take out funeral insurance?

Yes, absolutely! In most cases, your employer will only pay your funeral costs if the event of your passing takes place during your employment period. If you pass away after, there will be no payment. You can wait until the end of your employment contract to take out funeral insurance, although that is not very wise; the older you are, the higher your premium, and your health situation will also factor in. So, if you want to have lifelong funeral insurance at the lowest possible premium, it is better to take out funeral insurance yourself now.
